Through the efforts of our reviewers we have been able
to publish a substantial number of new Cochrane protocols -- usually
three in each new issue of the Cochrane Library -- and we have started
publishing our first full reviews.
In line with its mission, the WG is to integrate the principles
of evidence-based medicine and evidence derived from observational
studies (such as the benchmarking activities carried out within
the SVD movement) with the particular needs and interests of the
various partners cooperating within the SVD initiative.
Two of these were workshops run in collaboration with the German
Cochrane Centre.

All pesticides sold or used in the United States must
be registered by EPA, based on scientific studies showing that they
can be used without posing unreasonable risks to people or the environment.
Because of advances in scientific knowledge, the law requires that
pesticides which were first registered years ago be reregistered
to ensure that they meet today's more stringent standards.
In evaluating pesticides for reregistration, EPA obtains and reviews
a complete set of studies from pesticide producers, describing the
human health and environmental effects of each pesticide.
These studies are due within eight months after registrants receive
the RED.

Q. How many genetically engineered foods are on the market?
While farmers have used cross-breeding techniques to cultivate crop
and animal species with desired characteristics, genetic engineering
represents a radical departure from this practice.
For example, fish genes have been placed in tomatoes, human genes
in tobacco, bacteria in corn, and viruses in squash and fruit.
world s poor such as cassava and potato do not have much potential
for profit, the majority of genetically engineered crops are aimed
at helping large-scale farmers in industrialized nations boost their
yields and profits.
If genetically engineered foods are not labeled with the source
of the foreign genes, consumers will not be able to identify these
potential allergens.

We investigated the roles of these hormones in mammary
development using mice in which the respective receptors had been
inactivated.
To assess the relevance of the GH receptor (GHR) in the mammary
gland, we transplanted GHR-null epithelium into cleared fat pads
of wild-type mice.
Recombinant EGF, rat GH, or recombinant mouse Prl was injected into
these mice at the age of 7 weeks, and Stat5a phosphorylation was
assessed 15 min after the injection.
Despite the fact that a large number of embryos were lost from midgestation,
Stat5a phosphorylation was detected in mammary tissue from PrlR-null
mice as early as day 13 of pregnancy (Fig. 2A, lanes a-- d).

RT in situ PCR is a newly available tool for detecting
low levels of mRNA expression in cells using a nonradioactive marker.
Results for the anterior pituitary have been divergent: in an early
study (6), protein and GHR mRNA were revealed in all the cell populations,
whereas more recent studies (5,7) found them in only three out of
five.

Baseline bone mineral content(Kg) in HIV(+) subjects and controls.
Bone mineral content(Kg) after 24 weeks of recombinant growth hormone

There was no significant difference in total bone mineral content

24 weeks of growth hormone therapy does not appear to improve bone
mineral content in HIV-infected subjects with excess visceral adipose
tissue (lipodystrophy).

That statement, made by Dr. Frederick Tims, Principal
Investigator for the Music Making and Wellness Research Project,
is good news for older adults - and for music educators and the
music products industry.
The specific aims for the older students learning to make music
were as follows: to improve quality of life and well-being to help
participants become more relaxed, feel better, and respond in positive
ways to stress to enhance immune system function or resistance to
disease To accomplish these aims the lessons were enhanced with
teaching methods designed to encourage more participation and active
music making by all students.

The US Open, World Cup and 2000 Olympics are proof positive
that exercise, physical precision and the internal mechanisms of
the human body are inextricably linked.
This month -- the most intensive month of sports activities this
year -- a timely fall conference brings researchers and scientists
from around the globe to examine the relationship between exercise
and the building blocks of the human machine.
The conference will feature research presentations and discussions
on the latest interdisciplinary findings on physiology and exercise.
To date, little is known about the short-term effects of growth
hormone, but a research study on the effects of growth hormone on
exercise capacity with 30 young volunteers in a double-blind randomized
placebo-controlled study has been conducted.

In mammals, a new hormone designated ghrelin regulates
the release of growth hormone and probably food intake.
Ghrelin is a 28 amino acid octanoylated peptide that is produced
by the stomach and through its regulation of the release of growth
hormone plays important roles in bone growth, muscle growth, food
intake and possibly increased recovery from injury to name a few.
We and others have successfully developed peptides that mimic the
actions of Ghrelin to stimulate the release of growth hormone and
increase food intake.
These are small highly active peptides ranging in size from 3-5
amino acids or partial peptides that can easily be synthesized.

An ecological risk associated with the introduction of
a transgenic organism is that the transgene, though rare, can spread
in a natural population.
Reduced viability is assumed to be common because transgenic individuals
are best viewed as macromutants that lack any history of selection
that could reduce negative fitness effects.
Local extinction of a wild-type population from a release of transgenic
individuals could also have cascading negative effects on the community.
In contrast, if transgenic males were created intentionally to drive
to extinction a wild-type population of, for example, a species
of pests, it could serve as a mechanism for biological control.

A narrower and more specific definition of biotechnology
is "the commercial application of living organisms or their
products, which involves the deliberate manipulation of their DNA
molecules" (see glossary for definitions of bold-print words).
The structure of DNA molecules contains information that is used
by cells as a "recipe" for the organism; that is, the
characteristics of any living thing essentially are determined by
the information in DNA.
The "words" for the DNA recipe, called genes, are derived
from a 4-letter alphabet (A, C, G, T) and usually contain between
1,000 and 100,000 letters.
What's new since 1972 is that scientists have been able to identify
the specific DNA genes for many desirable traits and transfer only
those genes, usually carried on a plasmid or virus, into another
organism.
