The allergy doctor was utterly charming, so much so that
I almost failed to notice her lightening-like proficiency.
I must have just developed the cat allergy in the last couple of
years, because I hung around all number of cats as a kid with no
noticeable results.
It does explain my unhappiness in the Entropy Apartment, though
- that place was a filthy pit of dust and hair after the 2nd month,
even if you ignore all the dust that was created when the bathroom
ceiling fell in.
And it does explain why I started my sneezing career on my honeymoon:
the Boy's grandparents' house is full of old upholstery and has
housed a long line of cats up to the present day.

Allergies are a growing problem in the US.
The truth is that most people with allergies can keep their cats
and their health by taking a few simple steps.
Try using a hypo-allergenic dusting cloth, which uses static electricity
to trap dust particles, instead of dispersing them into the air
the way a feather duster would.
If your cat cannot tolerate being bathed, then try wiping her down
with a special hypo-allergenic dust cloth or a specially-designed
"pet wipe" in order to remove dried saliva and loose hair.
Hardwood floors, tile, and linoleum are much more allergy-friendly.
Also wooden and metal furniture is much easier to clean and keep
dust free than plush couches and chairs.

"Millions of cat-allergic people who now suffer with itchy
eyes and runny noses, and millions of others who live without the
love and companionship of a pet because of allergies, will soon
be able to keep a pet of their own," says Dr. Avner.
An allergen-free cat will be a significant new alternative to the
traditional treatment of cat allergies by eliminating the allergen
at its source.

I met Brian and his wife at a dinner party and he jokingly
asked if I could help.
On thinking about it, he was surprised to remember that when much
younger, he liked them and in fact, played with the neighbor's cat
and "it often came in our house and sat on my lap".
He readily went back, smile on the face, and while 'pretending'
his color changed, body relaxed, hands moved slightly, and I anchored
the "very warm and friendly feeling" he felt.
I fired the anchor and he smile...."That's weird!"
He closed his eyes and surprisingly quickly found the root cause
of his cat allergy - "a big ugly white cat that started coming
around my house and scared my cat friend away.

Scientists are gaining a better understanding of the
complex relationship between cat exposure and the risk of developing
asthma.
For many years, scientists thought that cat exposure increased a
child's asthma risk.
If the mother has asthma, then a cat in the home actually triples
the risk that a child will develop persistent wheezing - an initial
indication of asthma - by age five.
Children with documented cat allergy or with asthmatic symptoms
triggered by a cat should also avoid cats, he adds.
The study followed 448 children with a family history of allergic
diseases from birth to age five.

Your experience with airborne allergy is unique to you.
Nevertheless, many sufferers share similar concerns and need answers
to practical questions about coping with allergy day by day.
If allergic rhinitis means inflamed nose, why are my eyes so badly
affected?
I feel so lethargic with my airborne allergy even though I am taking
a non-drowsy antihistamine?
I suffer symptoms all year round that are worse at home than at
work.
I am pretty sure that I am allergic to my cat, but I don't want
to lose her.
Anti-inflammatory nasal sprays, used for a few days before your
exam, may reduce your susceptibility to airborne allergy.

Normal, AL, Jan. 24---Whether to sneeze or give your
cat away is a dilemma that many cat allergy sufferers face.
"A cat's regular preening helps release these harmful allergens,
which become airborne when the saliva dries," says Wilson.
The study, which measured the amount of allergens released by a
cat, found that a sharp increase in cat allergens released into
the air could be detected within minutes of a cat's entering a room.
The increase was great enough to cause a person to have a bronchial
attack in less than half an hour.
Scientists also discovered that carpet and soft furniture served
as reservoirs for cat allergens, which remained in the room four
to six weeks after the cat had been removed from the residence.

Early life exposure to the common aero-allergens such
as cats, dogs, pollen and house-dust mites leads to allergic sensitisation
in early life and clinical allergy then develops.
They now show that in western environments where cat ownership is
high, it is impossible to completely avoid cat allergen exposure.
This is due to the fact that the tiny airborne cat-allergens persists
for many months even in cat-free environments.
This allergen is also carried on clothing into schools, hospital,
offices and other public places.
"At risk" infants for cat allergy are sensitised by low
dose exposure, while high cat exposure may paradoxically induce
immune tolerance to cats.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America,
about six to ten million Americans are allergic to cats.
Patients are allergic to a protein, called Fel d 1 (Feline domesticus
allergen 1), found in the animal's saliva, dander, and urine.
Some people develop a rash or hives when they touch the animal's
fur.
Use a HEPA (high efficiency particulate cleaner) vacuum cleaner.
But run the vacuum when the allergic patient is out of the home,
since cleaning can stir up animal allergens and make them airborne.
Speak with your doctor if you have questions about Black Cat Allergy,
or any medical problem.

The allergens become air-borne as microscopic particles,
which, when inhaled into the nose or lungs, can produce allergic
symptoms.
Because cat allergen particles are particularly small (1/10 the
size of dust mite allergen), they remain air-borne for prolonged
periods of time.
Soft furnishings, such as carpets, sofas, and mattresses, will hold
cat allergen even after a cat is removed from the home or banished
from the bedroom.
If the cat is removed to a restricted area of the home, it is important
to realize that airflow through the duct system in a hot air heated
home could spread the allergen.

Allergic reactions to cats can range from inflammation

Although the most effective treatment is removal of the pet, recent
scientific studies have shown that steps can be taken in homes with
cats to significantly decrease one's exposure to cat allergen.

The allergy is more usually an immune reaction to a protein
(an allergen) found in the saliva, dander (dead skin flakes) or
the urine of an animal.
The allergen gets carried in the air or in dust on very small, invisible
particles.
It then lands on the lining of the eyes (conjunctiva) and nose.
It may also be inhaled directly into the lungs, causing allergic
symptoms.
Allergen contact with an allergic person's skin may also cause itching
and hives.
One of the most common pet allergies.
A tiny protein particle, the Fel d 1 allergen, found in the cat's
skin flakes and saliva causes this allergy.

Household pets are the most common source of allergic reactions
to animals.
Many people think that cat allergy is provoked by the fur of cats
and dogs.
But researchers have found that the major allergens are proteins
secreted by oil glands in the animals' skin and shed in dander as
well as proteins in the saliva, which sticks to the fur when the
animal licks itself...
Fel d 1 is the major cause of allergic reactions to cats.
During a cat's self-cleaning process, Fel d1 from the saliva is
deposited on the fur.

Cats are prolific producers of allergens that can cause both allergy
and asthma.
In testing conducted by this writer, significant cat allergen levels
were observed in house dust two years after the house was vacated
by the previous owner.
Levels of cat allergen as low as 1 ug/gram floor dust are believed
to be sufficient to cause sensitization and allergy type symptoms;
higher concentrations may be necessary to cause asthmatic attacks.
Cat allergen levels of 1 ug/gram floor dust are common in many buildings
where cats are not normally present.
These include residences, schools, and office buildings.

NEW YORK--A new type of treatment may one day help people
with cat allergies to suffer less from symptoms such as wheezing,
shortness of breath, itchy eyes and runny nose whenever they come
into contact with a feline, suggests a new study published by the
American Lung Association.
The treatment, consisting of four weekly shots, reduced symptoms
of cat allergy in people receiving the highest dose for six weeks
after treatment.
Current treatment for severe cat allergy consists of an initial
series of at least 25 injections over three months or more, followed
by booster shots every two weeks, sometimes for years, said study
author Philip S. Norman, M.D., Professor of Medicine at the Johns
Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

individuals.
This is at least in part due to the popularity of these
animals as household pets.
But the most important reason is that humans develop allergy to
these animals more readily than to most other pets.
Cat allergy is by far the commonest allergy to pet animals.
Even in minute amounts these allergens can have devastating effects
on allergy-prone individuals.
And even after these animals are removed from the house, significant
amounts of the allergens linger in the house for several months.
The only sensible solution for cal allergy is removing the animal
from the house and thoroughly cleaning the floor, walls, furniture
and so on.
