Callie, a l-year-old female Irish setter, was evaluated
for generalized pruritus of three months' duration.
Gradually, skin lesions developed, and the pruritus became intense.
The hyperpigmented, lichenified lesions in the axillary area are
characteristic of yeast (Malassezia species) dermatitis.
Initial diagnosis and treatment Our initial diagnosis was superficial
pyoderma, Malassezia dermatitis, and possible scabies.
The yeast dermatitis was treated with a 2% chlorhexidine shampoo
every three to seven days and a topical 2% chlorhexidine leave-on
conditioner applied to the lichenified areas every day.
Revised diagnosis and treatment Our revised diagnosis was resolving
superficial pyoderma and Malassezia dermatitis and possible allergic
dermatitis (e.g. food allergy, atopy).

Because of its molecular structure, vitamin C is able
to donate hydrogen atoms from two hydroxyl positions to neutralize
free radicals.
In addition to its hefty content of ascorbic acid, our buffered
vitamin C also supplies potassium and the macrominerals calcium
and magnesium at approximately one half the RDI per level teaspoon.
Item no. 70360 Available in bottles of 90 capsules Also known as
nicotinic acid, niacin is an essential nutrient, positioned at the
core of NAD/NADH and NADP/NADPH, which are major redox-active "electron
storage" compounds.
Biotin and folic acid are intimately involved in many of the same
pathways, and are commonly regarded as quasi-B vitamins.* Suggested
use: As a dietary supplement, 1 capsule once or twice daily with
meals, or as directed by a healthcare practitioner.

There is increasing evidence that bovine milk proteins
may play a role in the pathogenesis of infantile colic and that
removal of cow's milk from the infant's diet may reduce the symptoms
of colic in a small percentage of infants (2-9).
When the infants were challenged in a double-blind design with capsules
containing bovine milk powder, bovine whey protein concentrate or
placebo, 11 infants reacted with an increase in crying time to bovine
milk and bovine whey protein.

Amiodarone hydrochloride intravenous injection (Faulding
Pharmaceuticals) is now available to initiate treatment for, and
to prevent, frequently occurring ventricular fibrillation and hemodynamically
unstable ventricular tachycardia in patients who have not responded
to other therapies.
Patients for whom oral amiodarone is indicated but who cannot take
drugs orally are also suitable candidates for the injectable form.
The drug is available in packages of 10 ampules, each at a dose
of 150 mg/3 ml.
Squibb have announced the launch of the REACH (Reduction of Atherothrombosis
for Continued Health) Award Program, which aims to recognize promising
work in improving the management of this disease.
The closing date for this year's entries is March 21, 2003.

Egg allergy usually begins in infancy, often soon after
egg is started.
It usually disappears by age five to seven years, but may sometimes
be lifelong.
Egg white, especially raw or poorly cooked causes more severe allergy
than egg yolk (yellow) e.g., tasting raw batter, playing with egg
shells, or egg white icing.
Mildly egg allergic children can often eat food prepared with small
amounts of egg e.g., cakes, muffins, without an immediate reaction.
However, these trace quantities may aggravate eczema, and may cause
the egg allergy to stay longer.
Avoid foods with more egg e.g., French toast, mayonnaise, pancakes
etc.

Soy lecithin consists of three types of phospholipids;
phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphotidylinositol
(PI).
It is extracted from soybean oil and is generally used as a natural
emulsifier or stabilizer in various food applications.
Lecithin provides an excellent source of choline, which is essential
to every living cell in the body and is one of the main components
of cell membranes.
Scientists believe lecithin and choline may aid in memory and cognitive
function, cardiovascular health, liver function, reproduction and
fetal development and physical and athletic performance.
The majority of soy lecithin used in food applications is derived
from refined soybean oil that has been processed using the hot-solvent
extraction technique, which eliminates most, if not all, allergenic
proteins.

An Agency survey of soy sauce used in catering outlets
has revealed significantly fewer samples containing unacceptable
levels of the chemical 3-MCPD than did a retail survey published
by the FSA last year.
This compares to 22% -- 22 out of 100 --of soy sauces that were
sold directly to consumers and tested by the FSA in 2001.
www.food.gov.uk The Food Standards Agency has produced a series
of bright, colourful booklets that provide practical nutritional
advice for people at different lifestages.
The booklets are packed with useful information and answers to the
most common questions people ask, whether they have a young baby
or a growing child to feed, or perhaps are trying for a baby.
