TECO Pregnancy Dipstick Test detects Urinary hCG concentrations
greater than 25 mIU/ml as indicated by the development of two lines
on the test strip.
From the onset of pregnancy hCG concentrations in a woman's serum
and urine increase rapidly making the hormone a good marker for
pregnancy testing.
The test strip in the device consists of a conjugate pad containing
mouse monoclonal anti-hCG antibody dye-conjugated to Colloidal Gold,
and a nitrocellulose membrane strip containing a test (T) line that
is captured with rabbit anti-hCG antibody, and a control (C) line
containing goat anti-mouse antibody, which should be bound to the
conjugated monoclonal antibody regardless of the presence of hCG.
Specimens collected at any time may be used, however the first morning
urine generally contains the highest concentration of hormone.

My period is very regular (every 27 days).
I am now 3 days late and my breasts are very tender.
I understand how the tests work - looking for hcg levels, but my
question is --- if indeed I am pregnant, but the hcg level is too
low to detect at 2 days passed a missed period, is it likely that
this will be a "compromised" pregnancy?
I had a miscarriage last Summer and I'm trying to prepare myself
if this will be another disappointment.
I've also read the ectopic pregnancy is a possibility.

Home pregnancy tests (HPTs) are designed to detect it.
A: Basically the pregnancy tests that detect the lowest number of
units should be more sensitive and give you the earliest results.
Q: How accurate are home pregnancy tests on the first day of a missed
period?
Your hCG levels should double every 2-3 days and many people won't
have a positive HPT until the first day of a missed period or even
a few days later.
A: You should use midstream urine -- meaning you should pee a little
first and then either hold the test stick in your urine stream or
use a collection cup.

Women produce varying levels of hCG despite similar gestational
ages.
This would affect hCG levels and timing of positive tests.
There also are many sensitivities attributed to the various pregnancy
test kits; some pick up as little as 25 mIU/ml with the average
being a sensitivity of 300 mlU/ml, which is the standard recommended
sensitivity in detecting the average pregnancy 35 days after the
last menstrual period.
The primary cause of false negative pregnancy tests is inaccuracies
in timing of the test or in the procedure itself.
Following kit instructions to the letter is very important but even
then false negatives do occur.

has an hCG detection level of 20 mIU's.
All home pregnancy test kits use monoclonal antibodies to detect
a pregnancy hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
hCG is produced by the developing placenta beginning the day on
which the embryo implants in the uterine wall.
The Early Home Pregnancy Test from IND Diagnostics accurately detects
the presence of the pregnancy hormone hCG in urine in very small
trace amounts - 20 mlUs.
The Early Home Pregnancy tests from IND Diagnostics are clinically
proven to be as safe, effective and accurate as similar pregnancy
tests administered by doctors, hospitals and health clinics.

Blood is drawn from a vein (venipuncture), usually from
the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand.
The puncture site is cleaned with antiseptic, and a tourniquet (an
elastic band) or blood pressure cuff is placed around the upper
arm to apply pressure and restrict blood flow through the vein.
Once the blood has been collected, the needle is removed, and the
puncture site is covered to stop any bleeding.
Most pregnancy tests now use monoclonal antibodies to detect Beta-HCG
in the blood sample.

The pregnancy tests are used to obtain quick visual, qualitative
results for early detection of pregnancy hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin)
hormone in urine samples.
Even though any urine sample is appropriate for hCG testing, the
first morning urine is optimal because it generally contains the
highest concentration of hCG in specimen.
The control line is designed to validate the test and should be
crisp and clear in intensity with white membrane background.
A color band appearing on the control region of the strip indicates
proper test performance.

Home pregnancy tests can detect the presence of a pregnancy
hormone (called human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG) in a sample
of urine.
The most common types of home pregnancy tests use a test strip or
dipstick that you either hold in the urine stream or dip into a
sample of urine.
An area on the end of the dipstick or test strip changes color if
hCG is present, meaning you are pregnant.
A second type uses a urine collection cup or well with a testing
device.
To use this type of test, you place several drops of urine into
a well in the testing device or you immerse the well into urine
that has been collected in a cup.

For women waiting to find out if they are pregnant, a
few days can feel like an eternity-so it can be tempting to take
a home pregnancy test as soon as possible, especially now that some
tests claim to give accurate results up to three or four days before
a woman expects her period.
Nearly four out of five doctors (79 percent) polled in an independent
survey commissioned by Pfizer Consumer Healthcare at the annual
meeting of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists
say they prefer women not to use a home pregnancy test up to four
days before their expected menstrual period.
Clinical testing shows almost half of pregnant women (48 percent)
get a "false negative" response four days before their
period is due.

A new NIEHS study indicates home pregnancy tests may
not be able to detect pregnancy as early as their advertisers claim.
The day of implantation was determined by testing first-morning
urine samples using a very sensitive laboratory test for human chorionic
gonadotropin, a marker for pregnancy.
"While some pregnancies were detectable much earlier, only
90 percent of clinical pregnancies were detectable by any known
means at the first day of missed menses.
In practice, the percent of false negatives with test kits is probably
greater on this day, given the reported assay properties of kits
and other practical limitations," the report said.

NEW YORK - A blood test given during the first trimester
of pregnancy may help doctors predict which women will develop diabetes
later on, new research suggests.
GDM can make pregnancy difficult for the mother, but it can also
cause problems for the unborn baby.
For instance, babies of mothers with GDM are often abnormally large--a
problem that makes c-section much more likely.
In the new study, Thadhani's team measured blood levels of protein
called sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG).
Women who developed GDM had SHBG levels that were much lower than
those of women who remained diabetes-free throughout pregnancy.

Positive specimens react with the specific antibody-hCGcolored conjugate
to form a colored line at the test line region of the membrane.
To serve as a procedural control, a colored line will always appear
at the control line region if the test has been performed properly.

detection of hCG in urine.
The test employs a test strip with a unique combination of monoclonal

capture antibodies directed against hCG and mouse IgG respectively.
The formation of one or two colored lines provides an easy readout
for negative built-in quality control, since it will not appear
in the case of improper handling or reagent deterioration.
Specimens may be held at room temperature a few hours; however,
in the event testing is anticipated to be delayed, refrigerate (2

Whether you're trying to get pregnant or trying not to,
a home pregnancy test offers a fast and reliable way to find out
where you stand.
One-step tests that require you to hold a test stick under your
urine stream are the easiest.
If cost is a concern, opt for generic or less well-known brands,
which provide the same reliable results as heavily advertised brands.
If you think you might be testing more than once, buying a double
kit is more cost-effective.
But studies show that people don't always use the tests properly.
So even one-step tests start with an extra step: reading the package
instructions carefully.

Identifying the best home pregnancy tests all comes down
to two criteria: Sensitivity and ease of interpretation.
Any decent test has to be sensitive enough to detect a pregnancy,
but not so sensitive that it results in a false-positive reading.
HCG is produced soon after an embryo attaches itself to the uterus,
and its presence in the woman's body increases rapidly in the subsequent
days.
Most of the reviewers we found recommend either Be Sure One Step
(*est. 5.99 for a single-use kit) or Confirm One-Step (*est. $6.99
for a single-use kit), both of which can detect hCG levels as low
as 25 mIU.

In addition to the typical symptoms of pregnancy, some
women experience other problems that may be annoying but usually
disappear after delivery.
Home pregnancy tests are more than 97% accurate if the result is
positive, and about 80% accurate if the result is negative.
If the result is negative and there is no menstrual period within
another week, the pregnancy test should be repeated.
Blood tests to determine pregnancy are usually used only when a
very early diagnosis of pregnancy is needed.
These groups include women over age 35 who had another child or
a close relative with a birth defect, or who have been exposed to
certain drugs or high levels of radiation.

woman is a hormone called beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (ß-hCG
- the basis of pregnancy tests), however it is lower in 85% of ectopic
pregnancies than ß-hCG levels seen in normal pregnancy at similar
embryo age.
With enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for ß-hCG (which

of women with an ectopic pregnancy will have a positive pregnancy

Even if the date of ovulation or conception is known, 2.5% of women
