Many prescription drugs available from foreign sources are either

versions of FDA approved drugs.
With copies of this letter, we are advising the regulatory drug
officials in the countries from which you operate of these potential

Many over-the-counter (OTC)
medications like Tylenol, Excedrin, and store-brand products contain
the same pain reliever found in your prescription medicine.
By combining your prescription medicine with one or more of these
products, you may be getting more than the recommended daily dose
of pain reliever.
If your doctor has marked your prescription here...
...examine this list of nonprescription medicines for products you
may be taking.
Do not use any of these OTC products with the prescription medicine
marked by your doctor.

Converting from one opioid
to another in opioid-responsive patients is often necessary as dose
limits of short-acting combination products are reached or the use
of a long-acting agent is desired.
"Equianalgesic Dose Charts" compare doses of different
opioids required to produce the same pain relief as morphine 30
mg po, which is used as the standard for comparison.
Conversions of the commonly used short-acting opioids, hydrocodone
or oxycodone, are relatively simple.
This is approximately one-to-one equivalent to 30 mg of morphine,
or long-act-ing morphine 15 mg bid.
Step 3: Multiply the EDU by the ED for the new drug to get the total
dose of the new opioid.

-- Why there might be an
increase in abuse What are prescription opioids?
· Assesses lifetime, past year and past 30 day non-medical
use of prescription opioids in 12th graders.
· NHSDUH collects prevalence data and should be a valuable
resource to detect trends, but in my opinion it really has not been
for the last several years.....
-- Advantage: more privacy for respondent, might increase honesty
of the respondents regarding their drug use -- Disadvantage: We
were told by the survey people in 1999 that making comparisons between
1999 data and earlier years inappropriate.
· In 2002, estimated numbers of persons dependent (ie, serious
abusers) on prescription opioids (DSM-IV criteria) was over 900,000
people.
