Vistaril is not a cortical depressant, but
its action may be due to a suppression of activity in certain key regions of the
subcortical area of the central nervous system.
The physician should reassess
periodically the usefulness of the drug for the individual patient.
Hydroxyzine,
when administered to the pregnant mouse, rat, and rabbit, induced fetal abnormalities
in the rat and mouse at doses substantially above the human therapeutic range.
Since drowsiness may occur with use of the drug, patients should be warned of
this possibility and cautioned against driving a car or operating dangerous machinery
while taking Vistaril (hydroxyzine pamoate).

Hydroxyzine is
rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and Vistaril's clinical effects
are usually noted within 15 to 30 minutes after oral administration.
As
a sedative when used as premedication and following general anesthesia, Hydroxyzine
may potentiate meperidine (Demerol®) and barbiturates, so their use in pre-anesthetic
adjunctive therapy should be modified on an individual basis.

is a complex psychiatric disorder characterized by repetitive severe hair pulling
which may cause hair loss.
The patients were assessed before the treatment
and reassessed after one month by using the Children Depression Inventory (CDI),
the Children State Anxiety Inventory (CSAI), and the Children Trait Anxiety Inventory
(CTAI).
Both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy are considered to be useful
for the treatment of trichotillomania (3,9,11).
The Children Depression
Inventory (CDI) is a 27item self-rated symptom oriented scale suitable for use
by children and adolescents ranging in age from 7 to 17 years.
This decrease
in total CDI scores was not found statistically significant (p>0.05).
