There are
animal sources (retinol) and vegetable sources (carotenoids) of vitamin A in foods.
Inadequate intake of vitamin A can cause night blindness, dry scaly skin, increased
risk for infections, and poor growth.

To investigate whether excessive dietary intake of vitamin A (retinol) is associated
with decreased bone mineral density and increased risk for hip fracture.
For the case-control study, 247 women who had a first hip fracture within 2 to
64 months after enrollment and 873 age-matched controls were selected from women
aged 40 to 76 years participating in the Swedish Mammography Cohort [2].
Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry was used to measure bone mineral density at the
lumbar spine, the total body, and three regions of the proximal femur.
The mean daily intake of vitamin A in these cohorts was more than three times
the 0.5-mg daily dose of retinol equivalents recommended by the Food and Agriculture
Organization and World Health Organization [4].

Vitamin A deficiency is a worldwide problem and is most commonly seen among
women and children in developing countries.
y increased rates of miscarriage,
ill-health and death in pregnant women; and y low birth-weight and premature babies.
Vitamin A is found in a range of foods, and exists in two forms --- retinol and
carotene.
Breastmilk is a good source of retinol and is very well absorbed
by babies.
For most babies who are exclusively breastfed, breastmilk can
provide all their vitamin A needs until six months of age.
In many parts
of the world, and here in the Pacific, countries have adopted mass population
supplementation programmes to provide additional vitamin A to those people at
particular risk.
