arms, abacavir, protease inhibitor, antiretroviral agents, HIV-1
infection, hypersensitivity reactions, viral load, nevirapine, rash.
"Increasingly, physicians are looking for alternatives
to protease inhibitor regimens due to their associated adverse event
profiles.
In the multicenter, open-label study, 460 patients who had been
previously exposed to a PI-based regimen and had a plasma viral
load below limit of quantitation were randomized to three PI-sparing
arms containing a VIRAMUNE- (n=155), efavirenz (n=156) or abacavir-
(n=149) based regimen.
The PI-sparing regimens were generally well tolerated.
The most commonly seen adverse event were rash and elevation of
transiminases, neuropsychiatric and hypersensitivity reactions in
the nevirapine, efavirenz and abacavir arms, respectively.
VIRAMUNE is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI)
indicated for use in combination with other antiretroviral agents
for the treatment of HIV-1 infection.
Boehringer Ingelheim is committed to the research and development
of novel antiretroviral agents.

In their first semester, student members of UTR participated in
programs to bring earthquake relief supplies to victims of quakes
in Ecuador and India, foodstuffs to the hungry in Sudan, and AIDS
drugs to patients in Haiti.
Support went chiefly to the Self-Employed Women's Association (SEWA),
the Janpath Citizen's Initiative, and other groups that supplied
relief material, food, medical supplies, and temporary housing.
